Guest lecture by Prof. Paul Josephson: “Russia’s Nuclear Renaissance: Atomic Energy in the Putin Era”, Helsinki
Welcome to a special guest lecture by professor Paul Josephson (Colby College, USA):
“Russia’s Nuclear Renaissance: Atomic Energy in the Putin Era”
Time: Thursday, February 21, 2019, at 16-18.
Place: University of Helsinki, Aleksanteri Institute, 2nd floor meeting room (Unioninkatu 33).
The Soviet Union was a scientific powerhouse. Under President Putin, Russia is striving to reclaim its position as a superpower – with programs in nanotechnology, space, and nuclear power as symbols of its status. Indeed Rosatom, the inheritor of Soviet peaceful and military nuclear projects, has embarked on an ambitious – likely unattainable – program to rekindle nuclear energy with a variety of reactor programs including portable (“floating”) stations to power development of the Russian Arctic. In this talk, Paul Josephson will examine Russia’s self-proclaimed “nuclear renaissance,” and its historical and contemporary roots.
Paul Josephson teaches history at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, USA, and is affiliated with MIFI (Moscow) and Tomsk State University. He is the author of 13 books.
The lecture is free and open to all, welcome!
